Voor wie: Marieke van Asten emigreerde in 2016 naar haar geliefde Dominica. Ze is een enorm gepassioneerd en creatief persoon met een prachtige missie: de kinderen op Dominica een plek bieden om hun creativiteit kwijt te kunnen en belangrijke vaardigheden te leren voor de rest van hun leven. Hiermee was de stichting Breadfruit House Dominica geboren.
Dit zegt Marieke over breadfruithousedominica.com: “Living here in Dominica made me realise that there are not enough possibilities for children to explore their creativity. Due to lack of resources and funds, most children only do a limited amount of creative work in school. Of course, in schools, the emphasis is more on academic knowledge and skills. More so, after Hurricane Maria that completely devastated the island on September of 2017, the need was even greater for children to have an outlet. Exploring their creativity will help them face adversities in their lives; whether it is a natural disaster or a difficult situation at school or at home. Being creative will provide them with an ‘instrument’ and will help them (re)build their emotional resilience.”
